MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5 and new Skype Installation

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5 and would like to install SKYPE now that I have a new granddaughter on the way. I have read all sorts of horror stories about Skype crashing the system with this operating system, etc. I have NOT installed Maverick, but regularly keep all updates installed and up to date. Does anyone know if the problems presented by this OS and Skype have been resolved yet? If I do choose to install Skype (I assume following instructions on the Skype site) is there anything I should watch for or be wary of? I also have a new iPad and hope to use SKYPE on it when travelling.

Hi, again.

I wonder if I could ask one more question pertaining to installing Skype on my MacBook? I have the SKYPE app installed on my new iPad Air, which was done by the store technician. Do I somehow sync my iPad and Mac Book SKYPE applications? I have never used SKYPE before, but I understand that you have to set up some sort of an account with user name, password, etc. Do the same user names and password work on both? Is this something I need to do via iTunes, when I sync my two systems together for other things like contacts. photos, music, etc, or do I install one application on my MacBook and a second app (already done) on my iPad?

Thanks again for any assistance.

The answer from the Skype Community forum is you can use a single account, with some caveats.

For example, with a single account you cannot Skype your Mac from your iPad since that would be Skyping yourself.

I sync my Contacts with Skype. So if, through iCloud, you sync your contacts then they should be synced with Skype in both places.

Goodmorning, Hands4

I have tried to install SKYPE on my MacBook Pro, by going to Skype and Download for Macs. It downloads OK into the Downloads folder and I can drag it into my applications folder as per instructions from the Skype site. HOWEVER, when I double click to open it and to sign in, I get a message " Skype cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developerYour security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers." 😕 When I push the help button, I see that one has an option to override the security and allow installation. I am nervous to do that as I don't want any viruses, etc. I have tried to go to the MacApp Store, but can only find apps for iPad and iPhone. Can't seem to see any for my laptop.😟

Thanks again for your assistance.

Good morning.

Yes, Mac OS X is a secure operating system that puts up barriers when you download 3rd-party software. If you downloaded it from skype.com then it is safe to installl and run. You just need to get around the Mac OS warning.

Try right clicking on it (option-click) and then pulling down to Open. It should give you another warning which you can bypass.

If that does not work, change your security settings.

 > System Preferences > Security and Privacy

> Unlock, if nessary

> Allow app downoaded from: Mac App Store and identified developers

(With this setting it will still warn you about 3rd-party software.)

Try the open procedure above again.
