Can anyone please tell me why won't my iMac OSX 10.9.1 sync with Calendar on my iPhone 5c?
When I add an event to my iPhone it does not show in the synced iCal on my iMac and vice versa from the iMac to the iPhon. Even backing up and restoring doesn't seem to work.

Since you are using Mavericks/iTunes 11, you will have to consider using iCloud for syncing.
iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad explains this option.
I find iCloud convenient and reliable for Calendar syncing. Since you appear to have the required equipment and software, I recommend that you consider using it.
