Yes, it has to be cleaned a bit:

    1. You have WesternDigital softwares installed and running constantly. This software is creating problems, and it may cause data loss on the external disk. There is a link where you should be able to find the uninstaller:

    http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/index.asp

If you do not find it or it will not uninstall, download Appcleaner (Free) from

    www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/

and do the uninstall with it.

If you do not succeed, we will uninstall by hand.

Note: the external disk itself is OK, but when possible copy all data and reformat it.

    2. Uninstall Growl.

    3. Update Java.

    4. You probably need the Vodafone drivers ? If not uninstall the Vodafone apps.

    Same for T-mobile...

    5. In Finder go to  MacintoshHD /Library/LaunchDaemons/  folder and delete

    com.adobe.SwitchBoard.plist

then look in this folder if the Westerndigital entries are still there, if so, dlete them also:

    com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist        and

    com.WesternDigital.WDSmartWareD.plist

    6. Restart, empty the trash bin.

    make a new etrecheck list.

Nothing wrong with the disk itself, it is the WD software that is the problem. Just use any backup app or TimeMachine or CarbonCopyCloner, as long as the WD ("smart") software is really gone.
