Q: What's the latest version of OSX I could install on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)

Hey guys,

 

I have 2 macbook pros that I just purchased a 500GB SSD Drive for and hope to reinstall with the a new version of OSX. My question is, what is the latest version I could install on them?

 

One is a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Serial: W891396U71A  Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM (currently running 10.5.8)

 

Second is a Macbook Pro MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)  Serial Number: W89511Y6642, Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM (currently running 10.6.8)

 

Any hope upgrading them to Mountain Lion?

    Both of those will run OS X Mavericks (10.9). I run Mavericks on my late-2008 MBP (2.53 Ghz core 2 duo with 8GB RAM) and it is fine with it.

    Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks

     

    To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

     

         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

     

           Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

     

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —

                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later

     

    To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

     

    Are my applications compatible?

    As you can see both of your computers can be upgraded to Mavericks, the current version of OS X.

    You should be able to run Mavericks (10.9.1) on both of them.

     

    Make sure it is up to date with updates by going to the Apple Logo() in the top left, then Software Update. If it is up-to-date, then go to the App Store, and search Mavericks and install.

    Try mavericks. Mine runs mavericks with no problem.
