Q: Pages document will not open with pages

I received a .pages file via a co-worker on airdrop. The file was received on my end just fine but I cannot get it to open. Everytime I click on it, Pages opens up but the file never does.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you try launching Pages first, then using File -> Open to navigate to and open the document? Does that give any error information?

What version of Pages are you using?

What version of Pages was the document created with?

If you are using Pages 5.0.1, it won't open files created with Pages 08 or earlier, only Pages 09 or 5.0.x

I have tried opening the document through Pages via File - > Open but my results are the same (the document doesnt open)

I am running Pages 5.0.1 and the document was created on Pages 09.

Should open it. Try saving it before trying to open it.  If that doesn't help, ask them to re-send. Or get them to send it to you as an e-mail attachment and see if that makes a difference.

Do you have any other documents created in Pages 09? If so, does your copy of Pages 5.0.1 open them. If it does, then the problem is probably with the file sent by your colleague.

Just a few things to try.

No error message? Pages just allows you to select the file, accepts a click on the Open button, and silently goes back to whatever it was doing before? Odd.

Yeah, I've never seen a program react this way. When I click to open the document, Pages pops up in the header, as per usual, right there between the Apple logo & File but the document never opens up & no error message is displayed. (See attached image)

It's almost as if the window is transparent or entirely offscreen. Does the file name (or anythng) show in the "Window" menu at that point? If so, what (if anything) happens if you click on it?

Are you sure? Because Pages 5 can not open Pages '08 files.

It also alters/damages Pages '09 files.

If you owned Pages previously it should be in your Applications/iWork folder.

Open the file in Pages '09.

Update: I had been switching back and forth between 2 different external monitors, using my mini display port, that day.

What I discoverd is that Pages WAS opening my file, however the application window was popping up off screen so I couldnt see it. I re-started my computer and everything is now back to normal.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
