Macbook pro - copy/paste option not working

I have tried command C and V as well as right clicking to copy/paste. I have even tried clicking Edit > copy > Edit > Paste. Nothing seems to work. My computer is up to date. When I select command C/V, I see the Edit button on the top bar light up, but nothing happens.

Anyone have any fixes or ideas?

Randi.1106,

have you tried using both Command keys for copying and pasting, to rule out the problem occurring with just one of the Command keys?

If you open the Keyboard pane of System Preferences and select the Keyboard tab, then press the “Modifier Keys…” button, is the “Command (⌘) key” dropdown set to “⌘ Command”?

Do you have any key remapping software installed, such as KeyRemap4MacBook or DoubleCommand?

To rule out a problem with the Clipboard, are you able to press Command-Shift-Control-3 to capture the screen into the Clipboard, and then open Preview and select File → New from Clipboard, to see if the screen capture pastes correctly?

Hi, Thanks so much for your response back! I checked the system preferences, and the keyboard modifier keys are correct. the Comman key is set to command.

I do not have any remapping software installed that I know of. I'm not sure what remapping software is, so I doubt it. I haven't changed or installed anything new on my computer since this started happening.

When I press Command - Shift - 3, it takes a screen shot, and puts it on my desktop. When I go to Preview and select File > New from clipboard is greyed out. It won't let me select it. I tried Command-shift-control-3 also, and nothing happened. It didn't put the screen shot on my desktop and it still didn't let me select New from clipboard in Preview.

Donald - I have tried shutting down and restarting multiple times. Didn't help.

Randi.1106,

have you tried using both Command keys (not simultaneously) for copying and pasting, to rule out the problem occurring with just one of the Command keys?

Command-Shift-Control-3 is not supposed to put anything onto your desktop; it is supposed to copy the screenshot into your Clipboard. When you’d pressed that key combination, it should have made the same “photo snapping” noise that Command-Shift-3 makes. Did Command-Shift-Control-3 make that “photo snapping” noise?

If you go back to that “Modifier Keys…” button in System Preferences, and set your Caps Lock key to act as a Command key, does copying and pasting work with Caps Lock-C and Caps Lock-V?
