iCloud e-mail password rejected using Mail client

Today, I was unable to access my iCloud email via Apple Mail client using OSX 10.6.8. The SMTP server repeatedly rejected my password. This works just fine accessing iCloud directly, but not via Mail. I reset and recreatd the iCloud account to no avail. Any thoughts appreciated!
