I have a 2010 macbook air with a smashed screen. I'd like to use it as a regular computer/keyboard combo plugged into an external monitor. As such, I'd like to operate it permanently without the internal screen. Problem is, with the unit open, it detects the internal screen as active. Can I remove the screen or permanently disable it so that it is not detected by OSX?
This is an old thread, however if you remove the display from the screen, the computer should stay awake and the system should no longer see the internal display, only the external.

pretty easy yes, youd have to permanently trip the Reed Switch in the Air which tell is the Air is being used in clamshell mode with the screen closed.
the reed switch it magnetic, the lid magnet trips it to tell the Air its closed.

Unfortunately not that simple. The reed switch (which can be activated by a magnet) also disables the internal keyboard and trackpad...
Yes, youre basically using the Air like a Mac Mini, with attached monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Ive honestly not tried to run the Air sans monitor, I cannot recall if a protocol is initiated to cause the Air not to run from a disconnected monitor from the logic board.
(inserts note to try that).
You might be able to connect a monitor as a "secondary display". It probably is not that easy, but you could try. I hope this helps. :-)
