Brother printer and iMac shut down

When I send a print command to my Brother printer HL5410 my iMac shuts down. Evidently a power surge from the printer. Brother's solution is to disconnect the printer and plug it into a separate circuit. Does anyone know of another solution to this problem. Will any type of power strip prevent this?

Could be the printer driver or could be something corrupted, especially due to crashes while printing.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057#brotherdrivers says the printer driver included with the Mac is version 1.02.

Does the act of powering up the printer while your Mac is on actually trip the circuit breaker or just shut down the Mac? Are there other things plugged in and turned on that you could turn off before turning the printer on to test their theory. Too many devices on one circuit can certainly cause problems especially
if you live in an older home with 15amp, non grounded cirucits and have many devices plugged in to the same circuit.

Powering up the printer does not trip the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker does not trip at all. Sending a print command to the printer causes the iMac to crash as if you pulled the plug out of the wall. This happens randomly sometimes once in a week, sometimes 3 times a month and then sometimes once in two months. Very erratic.

The printer goes into a standby mode when not being used. Issuing the print command wakes the printer which sends some sort of a power surge (I'm guessing} to the iMac causing it to crash.

I installed driver version 1.1.0 in April 06 but decided to download and reinstall it again. I deleted the previous version of the driver first. The first job I sent to the printer crashed the iMac (BANG). Sounds like it is going to destroy the Mac. The next print job went through without a problem. I will keep track of how often it causes a crash and get back to this forum. Let me know if anyone has a solution for this problem.

Additionally, never have a problem sending print jobs to my Epson Stylus Photo 1280.

Welll it crashed again. This has to be a problem with the Brother printer. They evidently are aware of the problem because they sent me a list of things to try. The only thing I haven't done yet is replace the USB cable from the printer to the Mac which I will do today. I wish me luck 🙂

The computer reboots, (my compute crashes not reboots) restarts or enters hibernation mode when a print
job is sent.

Description of Solution 500000030109

HL5140 PS 4ZZZ The computer rebooting, restarting or entering
hibernation mode when a print job is sent can be caused by the power
supply or cable connection to the printer and computer. Please power
down the printer and computer then disconnect the printer cable. Power
the computer back on. Once the computer has booted power the printer
back on.

If the computer still reboots, restarts or enters hibernation this
problem is related to the power supply for the printer and computer. If
the printer and computer are plugged into the same surge protector,
uninterruptible power supply or power backup device please power
everything off. Unplug the printer from the power device. Plug the
printer directly into a wall outlet or a surge protector strip. You may
need to use the reset button on the power device. Power everything back
on and try again.

If the computer does not reboot, restart or enter hibernation the
printer cable or connection may be causing this problem. Please make
sure the cable connects from the back of the printer directly to the
computer. If the cable connects to a switchbox, scanner, zip drive,
hub, etc. it may be causing this problem. Please try a direct connection.
