Turn off ODD fan...

I removed the faulty optical drive from my white 27" iMac becuase it was causing system instability. Now the ODD fan is running at full speed because it thinks the thermal sensor has failed. Is there a software approach to turn it off? Am I correct in thinking that now that the drive is gone I could disconnect the fan? Or is there a domino effect?
