can't find superdrive on IMac desktop

I just purchased a 27" imac running OSX Mavericks. I also purchased an apple super drive so I could read my old files from my previous mac. When I plug in the drive it does not show up on the desktop anywhere and I can't find it when I search for it either. The same thing happened when I plugged in an Ipod. My flash drives show up immediately so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any and all help is appreciated.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

You need to insert a disk before it will show up.

Thank you. I could hear the disc rattling around in the drive but nothing was showing up. I restarted and got the disc to eject. The next one I tried worked fine.
