my iphoto doesnt work

my iphoto on my imac 27" late 2009 doesnt work. it shows up on my finder, but wont show on the desktop even if i click on it.. getting a message saying, this you cant use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X. It also says i have iPhoto 9.2. how do i retrieve my photos? I have the iMac working on OS X 10.9.1
