iMac will not restart after being unplugged...

My iMac operates normally until I unplug it for cleaning, moving etc. It will restart from SLEEP, RESTART, restart from SHUT DOWN and run without any problems. But if I pull and replace the plug it will not restart - no screen, fan, sounds...nothing until a few hours have passed. It then will operate normally. I could just leave it plugged in, but I'd like to nip in the bud any failures that might be imminent. Could it be the power supply? I'm a senior and not very sophisicated as to what/how to investigate the problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you.

Actually I have checked for SMC firmware updates (mine is up to date) and performed a reset of the SMC while searching the web for clues. I've also been searching for info on replacing the pram battery; lots on other models, but I can't find anything on youtube or ifixit that relates to an early 2006 intel iMac. As you ask about being outside my experience, that's for sure but I will take Gary and your advice and find a geek who will not

cause me to take out a second mortgage. My first iMac (acually my first computer at age 70) was a G3 graphite that after 6 years required a new pram battery, but that one was somewhat accessible. After 14 years of owning Macs this is all I've ever had to contend with. If you know where I could find info on my model battery replacement it would be much appreciated. Thank you all so much for your input. I think maybe it might be time to spring for a new one.

You are a little low on RAM but nothing too serious. If you are having problems with the Pram battery, as Gary suggests, take it into your local agent. It shouldn't be too expensive, though never having had to do that, I cannot be sure.

I suspect you may need to reset the SMC as per the document below. Read to see how it relates to your problem.

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

If this is outside of your experience, your local agent can do that for you, too, but I think you could do it. Print out the document before you try and make sure everything is backed up.

This could have been caused by you unplugging the system when there were applications Open.

What do you mean about (If I Pull and Replace the Plug it will not Restart)

If your computer has restarted normally then If you need to get off the computer Walk Away and it will go to sleep and when you want to restart the computer just wiggle the mouse and left click it and it will come awake and ready to use.

You need to use the Black Apple upper Left and scroll down and use those options.

to shut down.

Good Luck

Don

Thank you for responding.

"What do you mean about (If I Pull and Replace the Plug it will not Restart)"

I don't know how else to express the problem, but I'll try. What I mean is:

The computer functions normally in all respects except one. And that is this:

If I unplug the iMac from the power strip for any reason, it will not power up for hours after

I plug it back in.

Maybe I overstated my lack of sophistication with diagnostics. As for simple operation such

as "wiggling" the mouse to wake from sleep and how to operate the computer using the Apple

menu, I have no problem, having done so for quite a few years.

I understand exactly what you mean ... I think, 😀 One question, though. Do you shut down the machine before you pull out the plug, as opposed to it being in sleep mode or worse still, in operation. You don't actually say so.

If you do shut down, then I would suggest replacing the power strip, or testing with a different one. Be sure to eject any peripherals that are attached properly before you disconnect the power strip.

Yes, I always quit all apps and shut down tne computer before pulling the plug. The only peripheral that is

operational would be the Time Machine drive. Would that be relevant? As for bypassing the power strip, yes; one of the first things I did was to utilize a wall receptacle that I knew to be live. Does this signify the imminent failure of a computer component as you see it? I appreciate the assistance.
