Has anyone been able to create a Mavericks clean install flash drive?

like David Pogue explains in his book OSX Mavericks The Missing Manual on age 792. He tells how to create a Homemade Installer of Mavericks so one could wipe their hard drive and install a clean copy of Mavericks. I've followed the instructions religiously and have yet to end up with a usable startup flash drive. Though I name the flash drive something recognizable, when it finishes copying the Install OS X Mavericks from my applications folder it has the name OS X Install ESD rather than the name I assigned "Cruzer_Mavericks_Startup" which confuses the system. Inside is a folder labeled "Packages." This flash drive will not startup my iMac. Help if you can.

iMac Intel iMac 4MB ram, Mac OS X (10.6.8), MacBook 2MB ram
