In the last few months there is a checkerboard pattern across the entire document. Anyone know why?

Since you do not mention it, I assume the printed output is ok?
What brand and model printer?
The printed out put is fine. It's only when I try to save it as a PDF or Preview that i get the checkerboard so sending a PDF to someone is not feasible with this problem. Previously these actions were not a problem, it has only been in the last 4-6 months that it was noticed.
These problems are difficult to anlayse without complete information.... For example, you have not told us what kind of printer you have or how it is connected to your Mac.
Notwithstanding, I suggest you go to System Preferences / Printers, select the printer in the left hand column and click the - (minus sign). Close Syste Preferences.
Next go back to the same place and click the + (plus sign). then add the printer - the same one.
Now test the print preview one more time.
