The only thing that's been holding me back from upgrading to Mavericks is the issue with the external hard drive where the Mavericks deletes all the contents in the ext. hard drive.
I've tried googling to see if this issue has been resolved but no luck so far.

I don't know abourt the issue but I have three Mac minis here all running Mavericks (10.9.1) and all with external drives and I have not lost a single data bit in the upgrades or updates. On the other hand it is always good to have a full Time Machine backup or clone before installing any new OS version on any computer.
That issue was with certain Western Digital EHDs that had their own software installed on the EHD. Do a search here for Western Digital and you should get more info on that.
So EHD that is not Western Digital must be okay with Mavericks?
