How do i turn on cellular data for sms/messages only? iphone 5c

Hi, apple community

I recently bought my very first Iphone, 5C. i have a problem, though. I have recently found that i dont recieve texts when i dont have cellular data on. since im usually out of the house, i will need the cellular data on, but i dont want anything else on, (i bought the lowest data plan, 300mb, not knowing the plan included texts). i want to turn off the cellular data off for everything except for text messaging/sms, how would i do that? if anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

SMS does not use cellular data. MMS (pictures) and iMessage do. You can't just turn cellular data on for one app. If you don't want to use data for messaging, turn iMessage off and just use SMS.

I'd leave iMessage on and turn off cellular data. That way you can still use iMessage on WiFi like at the hotel for pictures. The Message App will use SMS and not iMessage when no internet is availble (non-cellular data. MMS could not be sent because cellular data is off). How can you tell the difference? .... from Apple support ....

"How do I know if I am sending an SMS, MMS, or iMessage?

The type of message you are sending is noted by the color of the send button and text bubble.

A text message sent as SMS or MMS will show the word "Send" in green when typing and have a green text bubble. A text message sent as iMessage will show the word "Send" in blue when typing and have a blue text bubble."
