Dear TT2, what do you mean "press ON"?? if Apple Mobile Device Support won't unsinstall? I can't get rid of this plague.

I mean that you should continue with the next step despite the fact that you couldn't complete the removal of Apple Mobile Device Service. There are reports that the eventual reinstallation still succeeds.

    Hi tt2,

sorry for the strong post I did before.

I was not able to locate the Apple Application Support to remove, due to Italian W7 the name was different.

    I did it again.

Now I succeded to remove all the components and manually the folders that remained after uninstall.

Then I installed again iTunes 11.1.3.

    FINALLY! Now it works again.

All my files are there as well as the apps.

    iTunes libraries are all alive.

Thanks a lot for the great support and for the patience.

Without your support I could not succed.

    Thanks.

Not a problem, I'm well aware how frustrating this kind of problem can be. Glad you got there in the end.

This was my experience, that the Apple Mobile Device program did not uninstall at first, but as I completed the rest of the sequence, everything worked out; the new iTunes installed, and the updated Apple Mobile Device program reinstalled.

You might have something there, but doubt S. Jobs would be happy with this type of snafu for their bread and butter program.

Thank you for your information.  I was able to reinstall i-Tunes 11.1.4 after following your suggestions.  I was however, not able to remove Apple Mobile Device Support nor Bonjour.  I also had to remove the i-Tunes shortcut on my desktop but these did not prevent me from successfully updating my i-Tunes.  Thanks again.

Thanks for your suggestion.  This worked for me in Windows XP, except the system would not let me uninstall the Apple Mobile Device Support - when I tried got an error message that there was a "fatal error during installation."  So I went to Adminstrative Services and disabled it.  Then rebooted, downloaded iTunes, merely clicked Run and it installed perfectly and all is now well.  Happily, I found this also solved the problem I've been having getting my iPhone to sync to my computer!

Can anyone confirm that -- after a delete and reinstall -- that their iphone and ipod and ipad backups are still there too. :)

I really want an official response from Apple. They could and should provide an automated uninstall program or other fix. At a minimum, I want an official answer to the question of what to uninstall and in what order. If the previous answer is correct then I wish they would say so, officially.

I can't speak for Apple, but the suggested uninstall order comes from their support documents linked to below in this revised version of my earlier advice. Some users have found one or more components would not uninstall, and one has mentioned being able to uninstall in a different order (i.e. revisiting those that had failed earlier).

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

    Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP

HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

I did it according the otacon 72 / turingtest2. Everything worked as described, nothing lost, everything is absolutely the same, as before. Thank you very much, you save my music and my mental health too.

Do the Apple staff read the discussions? They should warn the W7 64 bit users or fix the problem.

I've wasted so much time on trying to fix this during the little bit of free time I have during the week, but you know, I'm not even mad anymore.

I've been thinking about using an alternative option to iTunes for awhile now - especially as more options become available.

AND with the other services, it's a simple couple of clicks - I don't even need a Ph.D in computer programming (like what used to be great about Apple, for instance).

Just know this for sure - this WAS what made me decide to stop using iTunes...
