Restore your computer to the point before you installed the iTune new updated software and don't use this new update untill the issue is fixed.

I too had the exact same problem today 1/25/14 after the software unsuccessfuly tried to update.  I followed the recommendations of otacon72 and others, to uninstall itunes and related programs and re-install with a fresh copy and am pleased to report that the solution worked. Near as I can tell all my music and podcasts are up to date and working.  Thanks to those who supplied the answers, it would be nice if Apple deigned to weigh in!

TT2 (Turingtest2) and otacon72 have it right.  I found and followed tt2's suggestion first, and it worked perfectly for me!  THANK YOU!!

    This is what tt2 wrote:

Remove all of these items in the following order:

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

Follow these steps, and you should be golden.  You can disregard any other Apple software you have on your computer (though I THINK I read where someone suggested uninstalling Quicktime, as well - that iTunes shouldn't/doesn't need it anymore...?  I left it alone on mine and didn't have any problems)

iTunes doesn't need Quicktime any more, unless it is to support some obscure file types that still need it.

In that case follow the earlier advice to remove the recommended components in order, then reinstall.

So, a conservative estimate of 50 thousand of us, who could have billed time to clients, spent 3+ hours trying to fix this, when we could have billed an average of $75/hour during that time.  We would really like to know the name of the incompetent a-hole that released this update and cost our community $11,250,000. I want to make sure they move to Microsoft.

    This works!!

After hours uninstalling, reinstalling, disabling virus scans etc. This actually works and NO files are lost including all the ones I added over the years.

After hours of restores, installs, uninstalls, I was about to throw the machine away.

DrSchmenge solution works!!! No files lost either, including all the odd ones I'd put in over the years.

    Control panel and uninstall;

    iTunes

    Apple Application Support

    Apple Mobile Device Support

    Apple Software Update

    Bonjour

Reboot. Download a fresh copy of iTunes, temporarily disable virus scan and Right click on the exe file and select Run as Administrator.
