Q: "MSVCR80.dll Missing"

iTunes no longer starts on my PC the message is: this program cannot start  "MSVCR80.dll Missing".   This program has operated well for months and I have made no alterations other than attempting to install the latest update, what should I do?

I suspect that the last update of iTunes, versioned 11.1.4, is probably not the faulty one.

THe symptoms are appearing now but the problem is most probably due to a former version of iTunes. My assumption is that a problematic version was installed and operating properly, in the past, ...but had a faulty uninstall procedure (the Apple Device Support service failing to unregister from the event notification to device drivers before being stopped). And one can not be 100% sure if that faulty procedure was faulty at the origin, ....or if it became faulty under changing conditions later on (e.g. antivirus behaviour, microsoft security updates, ...)

But in any case, a proper testing and communication should have detected by Apple and a remedy should have been found as part pf 11.1.4.

I followed the instructions to the letter. I even uninstalled other (Unrealed?) Apple products such as Safari and Quiktime. I'm a Win 7 PC. I've tried it twice AND IT DIDN'T WORK!! I say again, I follwed the instructions to the letter, rebooted, run as adminsitrator - all that crap and IT DIDN'T WORK. Anyone have a Plan B?

Try using the slightly more detailed process outlined in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. It may help to use safe mode if you find yourself unable to remove any of the folders recommended in the instructions.

    Uninstalling:

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

And then reinstalling iTunes (without any reboot) from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ should fix the problem.

    It did for me.

I was affraid my history etc. would be gone after uninstall, but everything still the way it was before.

    Podcasts, music, playlists, apps, everything.

So I am trying to uninstall as directed but when I go to uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support it gets almost finished then the green bar goes in reverse and wont uninstall it. Any ideas? I already have Itunes and Apple Software Update uninstalled.

Many users have found that if the ignore the fact that AMDS won't uninstall any carry on to the next step that it all works out in the end.

Otrherwise, try using the slightly more detailed process outlined in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. It may help to use safe mode if you find yourself unable to remove any of the folders recommended in the instructions.

ok skipped that one, now I am following the detailed process, but when I try to delete the Apple folder from common files I get "The action cant be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program".

I dont have anything else open. Sorry to be a bother but this is getting frustrating.

Otacon72 has it exactly correct.  Follow those instructions and it should be fine!

Go into Programs and Features and uninstall:

    iTunes

    Apple Application Support

    Apple Mobile Device Support

    Apple Software Update

Reboot. Download a fresh copy of iTunes. Right click on the exe file and select Run as Administrator. Should fix the issue.

    Thanks.

As uninstalling/reinstalling seems to be the only sollution to the issue is got me thinking.
Could Apple have done this deliberately to get some extra software on many computers that they could not done without just an update?

Or removed something they could not remove with an update only?

Someone elsewhere has made the sensible observation that the current problem might not in fact be a fault with this installer, but a heretofore unknown issue with a component from an earlier build that wouldn't remove itself when it was told to go. To err is human, to really screw things up use a computer.
