Thanks to Daryl from the ITunes Store help for pointing me to this thread  and to all of you for providing the answer!!!  Ran into the same problem as you all did, and followed otacon 72's instructions -- although right clicking did not give me an option to run  as Administrator   -- and thankfully my music library seems to be intact!!!    Needless to say I will not click on the latest update on my laptop until there is notification that the update has been fixed.

    I have the same problem.

Fixed only after uninstalled all aplle software and downloaded and installed previous itunes version 11.1.3.8

Important: this downloading link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1615 is not actually a 11.1.3.8 version! It is a new 11.1.4 version! I download 11.1.3.8 from another site.

    sarahkitten,

When you do this again, can you check that the uninstall doesn't leave anything behind in the Program Files/iTunes or Program Files/Common Files/Apple folders? Make sure that the Apple Mobile Device and iPod Services are not running. (Your library and media files should be kept in your music folder and should not be affected by this.)

Check to see what other programs you're running during the install -- Outlook, IE, FireFox.

Something is making the iTunes installer cranky so that it's not laying down all the new files / deleting all the old ones and I'm trying to figure out what it is.

    Thanks

Apple Application Support, Mobile Device Support and Core FP (Which was empty). [To the person asking which folders I had to delete in Common Files]

Otacon 72's instructions worked fine - just follow them and re-boot before downloading and installing a clean version of Itunes latest update.  Music library stays intact through this process; I have noted quite a few of you were concerned with that issue.

I should probably update Itunes on my laptop -- should I follow Otacon 72's instructions on the laptop, or just get the update for the Apple site?

Will there be an auto-fix or announcement made for a fix?

Soulcoma, you were upgrading from 11.1.3, correct? Did you mention to me whether you updated via Apple Software Update or the manual download from iTunes website?

I guess my question to the people that couldn't install and just went back to iTunes 11.1.3 -- is do you have a copy of MSVCR80.dll on your machine and if so, what version?

Thank you to Octacon72,  I have Windows XP.  Had to remove the Apple accounts that you listed.  Reboot, When I went to re-install itunes - itunes window had option of removing or repairing itunes.  Repair did not work.  Had to choose REMOVE itunes, reboot then install itunes.   All of my music and playlist were there!   Thanks again for posting!

Restauren el sistema auna fase anterior a la actualización. A mi me funcionó. Ahora toca esperar a que APPLE solucione este problema para poder actualizar con seguridad. Que metedura de pata.

It happened to me the same. I solved it by restoring the system to an earlier phase of the upgrade. I hope it helps. Greetings from Gran Canaria.

I have also just encountered this very issue and resolved it by following otacon72's instructions.

Now I'm on the latest version of iTunes (which caused that upgrade issue to begin with) without a problem after this fresh install of it.

I'm on Windows 7 x64 and updated from iTunes version 11.1.3.8.

Interesting. You say that a reboot is necessary. That would imply that the iTunes installer having a problem stopping a service, like the Apple Mobile Device service. I wonder if just manually stopping the Apple services before running the installer would also work.
