Right click one of the files > Get Info > Open With > select Keynote version 5 > click change all

I can get all the way to "select Keynote version 5.3", but don't see where "change all" option is at.  Can you clarify?

    thanks so much,

Very helpful.  But that still doesn't help.  I am attempting to open a keynote presentation made in 5.3, in version 6.  It processes like it is going to open, but at the very end gives a message that it cannot be opened [in version 6] but will still open in version 5.3.  Any ideas why some presentations created in 5.3 will open in 6, but others will not?

The usual culprits are embedded movies with odd codecs that won't transfer across (although you usually get a warning pop-up about those), really huge images, larger than 3000 pixels wide, or non-standard Themes which you have purchased or created yourself that cause a glitch.

For an important presentation that you have spent a lot of time developing, save a backup and then, using 5.3, break it into a few chunks of 10 slides, saving each separately. Then try opening each one in 6.1 - I've had to do this a couple of times and I can usually get 70% or more of the preso converted to 6.1. Then you can break the mini-preso(s) that won't convert down into individual 1-slide documents and convert them until you hit the problem slide(s).

Slow, tedious, process of elimination. No other way around it that I have found.

Keynote 6 should be a fairly nice app some time later this year; for now it's buggy as **** for pro users who have crafted beautiful presentations. I'm not going to say "bear with it", because I haven't. The workflow of 5.3 is so much swifter, I still do all my client work in that version; but for my own presos, I'm converting a copy of each of them over a bit at a time.

    Sheesh!

I have even worse case. Presentation was created using 6.01. After upgrade to 6.1, message is:

"You need a newer version of Keynote to open this presentation."

Does not open using 5.3, and 6.01 is overwritten by 6.1

Upgrading Apple applications is more and more dangerous !

    Best,

    Same.

Any documents creaded/edited/saved bij the 6 version of keynote/pages can NOT be opened anymore after the updates from today...

Message appears: "You need a newer version of Keynote to open this presentation."

I repeat: This is Keynote version 6.1 generating this error messages!!

I have the same problem: presentations created in Keynote 4.0.4 (iWork '08) won't open anymore in the new Keynote 6.1 (iWork '09) in the newest OSX Maverick 10.9.2. I see more people with this problem, but no solution yet that works! People with Apple: what can be done to resolve this?
