iTunes 11.1 for Mac iPhone 5 not appearing in devices

I have looked in all the discussions, tried all the obvious and suggested solutions (except uninstall and reinstall iTunes, i don't want to do that) without any success! When I plug any of my kids iPad or my iPad, the device shows up but when I plug my up-to-date iPhone 5 it does not show up in the devices. It is very frustrating as I take a lot of pictures/videos and would like to simply download them instead of emailing myself each. I have been frustrated a few days, tried for a few days. Please, there's got to be a simple solution to this. By the way, it is the exact same problem in iPhoto, the other devices show up except my iPhone! HELP!
