Add me to the iChat Video Router issues...

I've been reading similar issues here for a couple days and I can't get video or audio chat to work. The test bots work but I can't chat with my friend. When I remove my router from the equation everything works, but I'd like to get it working right. Router is a Netgear Wireless wgr614v5 (though I connect the intel iMac with ethernet cable)

I've enabled UPnP though I don't know what to put in the "Advertisement Period (in minutes)" and "Advertisement Time To Live (in hops)" fields. Don't know if that matters.

2) Are you running your Mac with the Firewall On ? NO
3) Did you upgrade from Panther ? NO
4) How are you connected to the internet? Through the router (NG WG614v5) Cablevision Cable modem
* UPnP ? YES
c) We need to know if you know if the device is in Bridge Mode ? Don't know
5) Do you have any iChat Add-Ons ? NO (had iglasses, uninstalled yesterday)
7) Does it have anything to do with connecting to a PC ? NO
Speed Test Results

Downstream 4,150.9 Kbps ( = 4.1 Mbps )
Upstream 1,761.5 Kbps ( = 1.7 Mbps )

Hi hlumbard,

Sorry about the delay.

1) Try starting the UPnP in the Netgear twice (Netgear quirk)

2) Set the Advertising time to 5 mins (3600 secs)

3) Set hops the distance from Router to computer through any other access point (i.e. 1 if only computer to router but 2 if a Airport is in between in Access Mode) Don't use more than 4

4) Set the System preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab > Speed drop down to 1.5 meg and restart iChat

5) In the set up pages of the Netgear shoul be how it is connecting to the Modem. Does it say Using DHCP (get address Automatcially) If so does it list the IP it is getting ?

It is getting the IP address automatically and the ip is listed. Do you need that number? (I don't know how safe it is to list on a bbs??)

Going out of town for the weekend, will get back to this stress Mon.

Hi hlumbard,

It probably starts 192.168. something. These are standard for Domestic devices give out.

If the modem is doing DHCP, which it sounds like it is and the router is a s well we need to chnage this on one of them as iChat doe snot like two devices doing DHCP.

In my system prefs my ip is 192.168.1.2 But in the routers settings it's saying :

Internet IP Address
Get Dynamically From ISP 69.124. _._

Also I've got the DNS set up this way....

Ok so the Modem is in Bridge Mode and the Netgear is using UPnP. (Good)

This also means the modem is not doing DHCP (even if the Netgear is) (Also Good)

HAve you done the UPnP start twice thing ?

Defcom has a Netgear and I would follow his advice on it's quirks.

I actually just went to a website that give my IP and it listed it as:

That is not what my internet prferences say (192.168.1.2), could that be the problem??? Here's the latest error log. I notice some "0" fields that weren't there before....

I decided the only thing that had changed was me turning my firewall on so I turned it back off and now i'm getting the same old error log with numbers for the ports ....

I've never run into something so difficult on a mac since when I was trying to run some crazy software back in the day so I could network between mac and PC. Was it called "Dave" or soemthing..??? Back in like OS7 or 8 or something... Bad times..

i agree. apple plugs itself as it just works. and ichat, unfortunately, just doesn't. my gf and i just bought a MBP and MB in large part because of the isight and ichat. and what a disappointment it has been. now she's 2700 miles away and we can't AV chat. i've given up on ichat for now and we've started using the beta mac version of skype. it worked right out of the box. not perfectly (it is beta) but at least i got a video feed. why can't apple make a chat program that works without so much user tinkering?
