Before I spend a lot of money I want some advice on a bitmap editor. On the PC I used an old version of Paintshop Pro. (JASC). I need something that will let me vary the jpeg compression. I don't see that anywhere on the provided Mac software.
And please something besides Photoshop. Too expensive. Too complicated.

Pixen? (approx $10 also in App store)
Not used them so can't comment on how good they are but research them and see what you think - lot cheaper than Photoshop!!!
Also, a bit pricier and more sophisticated is Acorn.
Thanks. Neither of them say anything about jpeg compression. My scanner produces such huge files that when I make a jpeg or a pdf they are too large to mail. Maybe I need a better pdf editor too.

Change the scanner resolution to something lower than its default setting. That should make a smaller image.
i tried that. Anything lower than 300 dpi is not usable.
If you just want to resize the file size, i.e. jpeg compression or quality level, try Resize!. If offers many options for resizing the image as well as the file size.
