MBPr 13 losing half charge overnight while asleep

hello, i am new to Mac, have been using windows for over a decade now. so still learning ins and out of mac osx.

but i have encountered something rather puzzling. randomly, my MBPr 13 would lose more than half its charge (yesterday night it went from 100 to 51 percent battery) overnight while in sleep mode. when this happens the lower plate is very warm.

i dont know what is going on, as this doesn't happen all the time, it has happened may be 5 times over last 2 to 3 weeks. but this doesn't give me confidence to leave the machine off charger even when i am not using it.

if anyone else has similar experience, or knows the solution, i would really appreciate it.

thank you.

Hi chirantanf,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like your MacBook Pro may not be going into or staying in sleep mode.

I recommend first checking for the following:

How can I determine what is causing a sleep issue and how can I resolve it?

These are the most likely causes and solutions for sleep issues:

  • Sharing preferences: Enabling sharing for any connections can potentially disable sleep. Turn off file sharing if it's not being used.
  • Bluetooth settings: Bluetooth can wake your computer if you set the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" checkbox in Bluetooth System Preferences.
  • Are a keyboard and mouse connected and working correctly?
  • Do you have any other external USB or FireWire devices connected? Try removing or disconnecting them one by one, when not in use, taking care to dismount any that are storage devices before disconnecting them.
  • Do you have a print job in the Printer Queue? Remove any print jobs that are in the queue.
  • Is Spotlight indexing? This can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours after a new installation, or after connecting a storage device which contains unindexed data. Indexing prevents idle sleep.
  • Additional Software: Try a Safe Boot to help isolate a software issue.
  • Put your ear near your computer. Do you hear the "clicking" sounds of hard disk access?
  • Energy Saver settings: If the computer and display sleep timers are set to "Never", the computer will not sleep.

Hello Jeremy,

thanks for your reply. I can confirm that i have none of the issues mentioned in the article, I also went to apple stote and let them have a look at it. They reset SMC and PRAM. but after coming back, i noticed the same behavior again, i closed the lid with 84% batter remaining, and opened after couple of hours with 67%.

and the weird behavior doesnt stop there, right now my macbook is showing different battery percentage on lock/startup screen and desk top. one being 67% and other 52%.

thank you.
