It sounds like you are unable to access your AOL account at all from the Mail app on the phone. I would recommend these 2 trouble shooting steps from the article named:

- Restart your iOS device.
- Delete the affected email account from your device.
- Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Choose the affected email account, then tap Delete Account.
- Add your account again.
