MSVCR80.dll missing, cannot install iTunes

Downloading and updating the latest iTunes this evening destryed the current setup of iTunes. Now iTunes does not work at all. It says that MCVCR80.dll is missing. Error 7, Windows error 126. What to do? iTunes suddenly does not even start. Thank you.

Windows 7, updating iTunes RUINED everything

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Some users may need to follow all the steps in the appropriate support document which includes some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

I also have the problem MCVCR80.dll is missing. Error 7, Windows error 126. I have followed your instuctions to a tee but everytime I try to install iTunes this window comes up: User uploaded file

I first tried Retry, didn't work. Ignore went ahead and installed iTunes but that's when the error windows of the missing dll and windows error appear at the end. Abort walks back the installation.

Is there any other help you can give me?

Try using the slightly more detailed process outlined in HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. If any component fails to uninstall try moving on to the next step anyway.

I've no personal experience of this, but in one of the threads someone has suggested the Microsoft Fixit Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled which might help.

I would also recommend disabling any anti-virus software while trying to fix things.
