Imac won't connect or see any networks.

I have an iMac G5 10.5.8 that won't connect or see any networks. At one point I received a message that "All network services are disabled". The panel on the left of SystemPreferences>Network doesn't list anything. When I click the + button, after unlocking it, the cursor turns to a wheel and nothing seems to happen.

When clicking About this Mac on the left under Network it shows the Airport card but not Ethernet.

Any suggestions?

No, I don't see either one. When I click the plus icon the cursor turns to a spinning colored wheel and doesn't do anything else. When I force quit it shows System Preferences as not responding.

On a side note, this computer belongs to a friend and I have it at my house. She was worried someone was spying on her and I think she may have changed settings or deleted files. There are a lot of items in the trash on her account.
