Same happened to me (also on Jan 23 , 2014 , around 4 PM)

First, tried to update the lastest version of iTunes (11.1.4.62) but got the following error during install:

"Service 'Apple Mobile Device' failed to start ...."

Then I uninstalled iTunes but did not know enough to uninstall the following additional Apple products .....

iPod updater , QuickTime , Apple Software Update , Apple Mobile Device Support ,

Bonjour and Apple Application Support

During 2nd attempt to install iTunes, I again received the above AMD error.

Mannually tried to Start the AMD Service, which was in a Automatic Start State and got Error 1053 and the following error message ......

Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device service on the local Computer

Rebooted the Windows 7 (64-Bit) desktop and got the following error after Windows was re-established .......

The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer

I think there must be something wrong with the latest verion of iTunes. I tried to install 11.1.4 after it prompted me too. I would not install and now the entire instalation is corrupt. I tried uninstalling iTunes then and reinstalling it but the entire thing is hosed.

This cannot be isolated. Too many of us are having the same problem on the same day.

I followed this, but had some twists to it.

I did not remove QuickTime.

I could not successfully remove the "Apple Mobile Device Support" from my add/remove list, but after I removed everything else, I rebooted and then downloaded the install manually and ran it as administrator.

I'm up and running on 11.1.4 now.

Now, I'm pondering what to do about my other PCs. I'm thinking I will wait.

I had this problem today as well after trying to update iTunes.

The following seemd to work

After the ITunes install fails go and manually download updates from the tools menu.

go to open downloadeed updates on the Tools menu.

run AppleApplicationSupport.msi and select Remove...(repair did no help)

reboot and return to Apple Update

go back to the Downloaded Updates folder from the tools menu and run the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to install.

At this point was able to run the iTuenes.msi and install iTunes. Durring the Install I had to ignore an error while trying to restart Apple Mobile Device Support.

It may be better to uninstall/install Apple mobile Device Support befor e installing the new iTunes.

I've tried everything and do not have Itunes on one device, and absolutely refuse to let anyone else here update.

When they get it fixed I'll try to update.

Thanks to all the people who have posted tips on resolving this thing.

If nothing else I learned a lot.

I'm not completely happy with what I'm seeing in regards to the Apple response to some people on the many threads about this.

After fiddling around with the stupid thing, I ended up just doing a "Restore" and rolling my computer back to before I did the update. Worked like a charm and iTunes now opens with no error messages. I'll just ignore the update message until they fix this.

Based on the number of people having the exact same problem, it's obviously a problem with the upgrade that needs to be fixed.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
