I brought a Macbook Air 2013 i7 8gb Ram last year and I'm really happy with it apart from the fact that kernal_task is using around 500mb of memory.
Are there any solutions to this problem?

It's not a problem; it's normal.
Sometimes a PRAM reset can solve this issue. If its slowing down your Mac to a point where you cannot use it anymore (high CPU or Ram usage), it could be a logic board issue (or some related Hardware issue causing a panick).
Take it to a Apple Store, if near by, or contact Apple support.
