Apple's server thinks that your husbnad has an iPhone. I assume he did at one time. You need to call Apple support and ask them to disable iMessage on his account, as he probably forgot to do this before giving up the iPhone.
If the answer above is unable to help you I may be able to.
1. First you will have to find the Settings application. From there you will need to go to a tab called Messages. Inside of that tab is a tab called Blocked. From there you can eliminate any blocked numbers.
2. If that did not work I would suggest that you investigate the contact of your husband under the phone's 'Contact' application. Eliminate any email parts of that contact that are connected to the number.
3. If both of the following do not work go to Settings > then Messages > and then turn "Send as SMS" on. If that does not work turn iMessage off.
