Calendars and Contacts not syncing between iPhone and Mac

Hello.

I am using a MacPro4,1 (early 2009) running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 4 running iOS 7.0.4.

In iPhone, Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Calendars Settings are set to: Sync – All Events.

In iTunes, Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi is checked.

Calendar and Contacts aren't syncing, in neither direction, neither over Wi-Fi nor by cable. (I haven't, and won't try iCloud or however that thing is called now.)

No idea why. I'd be thankful for any hint.

Mavericks does not support local sync of Contacts and Calendars via iTunes as it no longer includes syncservices.

so there's nothing but iCloud to do this? Is there a workaround? Or do I have to use either other a different set of applications, or another set of operating system and hardware? Not syncing is no option, iCloud isn't either, changing systems is.

Exchange, Google, Yahoo, these are just a few of the alternatives to iCloud.
