What is the difference between a Mailbox and a Smart Mailbox?

What is the difference between a Mailbox and a Smart Mailbox?😕 This is only my second day on my iMac and I need to get control of my e-mails before they overwhelm me. I want to automatically move incoming mail out of my inbox and into a subfolder (Sorry for the Windows jargon; I guess I would move the e-mail to either a Mailbox or a Smart Mailbox.). I have already setup some Smart Mailboxes, but it looks like I should have setup Mailboxes instead so that rules can transfer e-mails from the inbox to the Mailbox. It appears as though rules will not allow transferring an e-mail from the inbox into a Smart Mailbox. Is this correct? If so, can I delete the Smart Mailbox(es) and start over? The original e-mail seems to still be in the inbox. It won't get deleted if I delete the Smart Mailbox, will it?

I really need to resolve this dilemma quickly before my inbox gets too full to manage!

HELP!😢

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Smart mailboxes are basically a convenience for creating a view of some mail based on some criteria.

For example, suppose you have a bunch of mail rules that moves mail out of your inbox into other mailboxes based on the senders address. Going into each of those mailboxes to read the mail would be tedious, so you could create a smart mailbox for "unread mail" that creates a view of all the mail not marked as read.

Actual storage is based on mailboxes. Rules operate on mailboxes. Smart mailboxes only provide views. You want mailboxes. Luckily, deleting a smart mailbox doesn't delete any actual mail, since it's just a view.

Dunno. The "move" command in rules is supposed to move mail, not copy it, and does so in my rules. Since I don't know anything about your mail setup or rules, I have no way to tell what the problem might be.

Could be the mail account isn't set up correctly (is it iCloud, or something else). Could be that your mail server (if not iCloud) doesn't conform to standard IMAP protocols. Could be that your rules aren't written correctly. Could be any of a number of things.

Thank you for the clear explanation.

Now I have created rules that are supposed to move mail from my inbox to specified Mailboxes. My concept of "move" is that the mail is removed from the inbox and placed in the specified Mailbox. Only that is not what has happened. The mail was moved to the specified Mailbox, but it also remained in my inbox. This is not what I want.

What am I doing wrong?
