iTunes 11.1.4 installation problem

Along with a lot of other users I had problems yesterday with the installation of update 11.1.4 on my windows7 64bit computer. After a lot of frustration getting nowhere I resorted to 'phoning Apple Support. Despite all the postings on discussion groups the guy there told me I was the first to report the problem and he had no knowledge of it. and they would 'phone me back this morning at 09.45 gmt today.

Following yesterday's call I decided to do a system restore to iTunes 11.1.3. iTunes didn't work immediately but only after an iTunes repair in the uninstall software screen.

The call came from Apple this morning and even now the Apple girl told me that she had no knowledge and she did not have aproblem with 11.1.4. I find this totally amazing and I think they need to get their act together. Why did they not pull the update when there were so many problems? Perhaps they don't read information posted in discussion groups.

The Apple assistant seemed surprised when I told her I would be sticking with11.1.3!!

It is a big company. I'm not entirely surprised if it takes time for information about a new and evolving situation to be understood and updated advice to be delievered to front-line support.

For anyone who has had trouble installing iTunes 11.1.4.62 and wants to get iTunes functional again, read on...

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Some users may need to follow all the steps in the appropriate support document which includes some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

Horse pucky! Support should have already tried it a few times before it was released! They should know what to expect when people start contacting them after a new update. (I spent more than 20 years in software support, so I do know what the RIGHT thing to do is...)

Hubby's computer and mine both experienced the problem with installing the 11.1.4 update. Both crashed about the time there was work being done on the Apple Mobile Device Support portion of the install. There was some sort of corruption somewhere, which in turn trashed the install. From that point forward, neither of us could get iTunes to open on our computers. Both of us got the same errors. (Sorry, didn't write it down & don't remember the exact message.)

We hunted down the uninstall/reinstall instructions for our various OS (I'm on Vista, he's on Windows 8) & performed all of the uninstall tasks. We both ran into a problem uninstalling Apple Moblie Device Support. It claimed it was uninstalled, but it stayed on the programs list in the Control Panel. We tackled the problem two different ways, both fixed the uninstall issue:

Hubby continued unistalling the rest of the Apple apps, then found after a reboot that the Apple Mobile Device Support module was no longer listed on the Programs list.

I found another forums string that mentioned running Repair on the AMDS module multiple times, then being able to successfully uninstall it.

Once reinstalled & system rebooted, we have run into various small glitches that are typical of iTunes after a new update: have to reboot the system a few times, have to reboot the devices (ipads and iphones) a few times, then the sync would work as expected.

It appears that if you do have the secondary glitches, they may happen after you "successfully" install the latest drivers onto the device (after plugging it in to the computer.) My recommendation would be to reboot both computer & device again, although you might be able to get away with a device reboot & an iTunes restart.

The first error was Service 'Apple Moble Device'(Apple Moble Device)

failed to start. Verify that you have suffficient privileges

to start system service.

The second error was Runtime Error!

Program ....iTunes.exe

R6034

An application has made the attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.

Please contact the application's support team for more information

The third error was

iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes

Error 7 (Windows 1114)

The reinstall does no good but only repeates the problem. Fortunatly I had a checkpoint to restore to.

I'm staying with 11.1.3.8. APPLE FIX 11.1.4!

That assistant is lying, or clueless. I have never known itunes to fail to install! How can we buy anything? There is a definite problem with the 11. 1. 4 update and the Apple Mobile device is the issue. I am afraid to do a system restore as this will bring its own issues. Do I ever regret installing it! I will NEVER believe itunes again.. but check discussions like this FIRST.

Follow the instructions from turingtest2, they work perfectly great and are very easy. only took me 1 try to complete and now my iTunes 11.1.4 works perfect. And by the way all iTunes data remains safe from previous version of iTunes, so there is no need to worry about losing anything and no need to try a system restore. Just follow the instructions of turingtest2, believe me they are safe and work properly.

The install is really great ....................... at trashing a perfectly good 64 Bit PC and hogging resources so it grinds to a stop. I counted 12 different errors but guess what, It installed perfectly cleanly on my MacBook Pro.

Come on guys, test your installers on allplatforms, I have wasted an hour fixing this issue, an hour I could have used much more productively.
