Textedit opens, lists but will not display any documents. Needs to be force closed.

Textedit opens, indicates it is open, will list documents but will not display anywhere when clicked. To close it must be force closed. Can only open with Finder and its top bar indicator. Can never get the Textedit top bar to show. When opened the top indicator bar (always Finder) goes from gray to a darkend out, nearly black, color. It is still legible but barely. Was woking fine until I dragged an opened document off to the left of the screen and it disappeared and the whole fail of Textedit began. What's the deal?
