Need a new hard drive

Need to purchase a new hard drive for my early to late 2008 macbook and I'm concerened I'll order the wrong one. Heads up I'm technology challenged...

So when I type the info apple sent me from a spec sheet 2.1 ghz macbook 120 gb 5400 rpm serial ata hard disk, everything matches up except the 2.1ghz. can I get one that says 2.5. I've found a seagate which seems to get good review. Please help. PS I have no idea what operating system. That's probably on the spec sheet too, but don't know category to look in.

Is the Macbook currently operational, so you can get some info off it? Apple menu / About This Mac is the place to start. Next click More Info.. and look in Hardware Overview for the Model Identifier.

If the Macbook is not working, look for the serial number and use it to find the specs.

My laptop is not able to open past the apple logo. I've already tryed the shift and power button and took into apple store. They were the ones who told me it needed a new hard drive. I've already called apple with serial number and they sent me the spec sheet. I'm still having a hard time understanding the info to order a hard drive so I can take it to someone to have it installed.

Do you have a Model Identifier? (That would be something like Macbook2,1.) That info should be on the spec sheet you got from Apple.

You need a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. You can install it yourself.
