Jan 24, 2014 9:29 AM in response to Oleanaby snozdop,The iPad is not a phone, that is why you cannot send text messages (SMS).
You can send iMessages to other people using iOS devices or Mac computers. That would explain why you can't send them to everyone.

May 24, 2015 1:05 PM in response to Mac~Bby ChrisJ4203,Nice of you to reply to that post, but it is a year and a half old, and what was happening at that time is different from what you can do now with Messages. Be sure you check dates on threads you respond to, given the conflict of information that can occur with different versions of iOS.

Dec 14, 2015 11:07 PM in response to DVCMOMby Tasilee,I Thought I had been able to send a message from my iPad (iOS 9.2) via my iPhone (iOS 9.2) but I just tried to send a message to a non-iOS mobile it comes up red in messages on iPad. I can send a message to the same number on my iPhone.
There is no "message forwarding" under messages options.

Dec 15, 2015 11:22 AM in response to Tasileeby ChrisJ4203,If you are using an iPhone with iOS 9.2, you need to look under Settings>Messages, and if you have iMessages turned on, then you should see a setting for Text Message Forwarding. This will only appear if the iPhone and iPad are logged in with the same iCloud ID. Then you should see the iPad listed under that Text Message Forwarding section in Settings. You would then be prompted for a code to enter to link the two devices together.

Dec 15, 2015 12:47 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by Tasilee,My iPhone and iPad are both logged in with the same cloud ID. On my iPhone under Settings>Messages, I have
iMessage ON
Send Read receipt OFF
Send as SMS ON ....as I thought this may be a limitation in sending SMS from iPad through iPhone
Send and receive MY MOBILE NUMBER
MMS messaging ON
Show subject field OFF
Character count ON
Blocked (none)
Keep messages FOREVER
Filter unknown senders OFF
(Audio) Expire AFTER 2 MINUTES
Raise to listen ON
(Video) Expire AFTER 2 MINUTES
That's it.

Dec 15, 2015 1:18 PM in response to Tasileeby ChrisJ4203,If you look in Settings>Messages on the phone, do you see Show Contact Photos just under the iMessage section? If you go on the iPad do you have iMessage turned on, and activated? Also, check on the iPad and go to Settings>General>Handoff & Suggested Apps, do you have Handoff on? If not please turn it on. You don't mention what version of the iPhone that you are using. Which is it?
-
Dec 15, 2015 1:27 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by Tasilee,On the iPhone, what I listed in my last post is EVERYTHING under Settings>Messages. There is no "Show Contact Photos" entry on the iPhone, but there is on the iPad and it is ON.
On the iPad, iMessage is set ON
On the iPad Settings>General>Handoff & Suggested Apps, Handoff is ON.
iPhone is a 5.
iPad is a Mini retina.
