Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

Thank you! Worked for me. (Using Windows Vista sp.1) Haven't opened my Mac yet to see if same issue exists, but I also didn't upgrade it to the newest version yet. Remains to be seen if that's a problem now.

Followed your steps exactly, but first removed MobileMe control panel, which has been hanging around forever. Then followed removal of the rest of your suggestions. I had no Apple Mobile Device support installed.

Thank you for the help. I am using Windows 7 and my iTunes updated following your instructions. I will note however that not only would my Apple Mobile Device Support not unistall (as you noted) but I could not delete the Apple folder in my Common Files either. It kept saying it was in use. I followed the rest of the instructions and the latest version installed. YAY!

You made my day!

Thanks.

I have tried to follow "turingtest2" fine suggestions, but it does not seem to work on windows 7.

Do you have any suggestions as to what to do.

I have tried to go back to the state of the computer before the new iTunes but access to previous stages seems blocked because iTunes changed the state of the computer. Any suggestions?

You may have to follow the slightly more detailed steps in whichever of these two applies to you.

Rebooting into safe mode or halting these services may be needed to delete any folder the instructions say you should remove.

You could also try repairing and then removing AMDS which has worked for some.

Glad to see your post before attempting the suggested fix. I had the same with Win 7 when updated iTunes. I do not see anywhere that Apple has addressed this. The good thing is iCloud is still working. I probably will now switch my music purchases to another provider as I have already done that with eBooks.

It finally worked - 1000thanx🙂 but not the first time around. I had to change the setting for allowing programs to change the computer to the lowest level of control to finally make the message "apple mobile device" wont start go away.

I am surprised to see such a large discussion on a topic and no official response from Apple.

Excellent post TT2. Why, oh why doesn't Apple ever acknowledge their **** ups!

Just a suggestion - before going though the whole rigmarole of uninstalling, etc etc - you could just try a system restore (Win 7); apparently this doesn't always work but it worked a treat for me. System restore - problem solved. Don't then try the update again though, hopefully by the next update Apple will have fixed this infuriating bug.
