Q: Cannot Update Apps - Different Apple ID

I purchased my MacPro used from somebody.  It was installed with Mavericks.  I went to System Preferences>App Store and clicked on "Check Now" button to check for updates.  These updates are available:  OS X, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, and iPhoto.  When I click on "Update All" button I get a dialogue box asking me to sign in to download from the App Store.  In the "Apple ID" window is the ID of the person from whom I bought the MacPro and I am not given the option of typing in my own Apple ID.

I suspect this is because the previous owner purchased Mavericks through the App Store and now I am unable to update the software because I did not purchase it.

If that is the case, do I just need to go to the App Store and download the OS X Mavericks using my Apple ID?  And if so, will the install preserve all of my preferences?

Thank you in advance.

This problem was solved (being unable to update the OS X Maverick licensed to the previous owner's Apple ID) by going to the App Store, signing in under my Apple ID, downloading OS X Maverick, and reinstalling the Maverick that I downloaded through my Apple ID.

You see that is something that has not been possible previously. It could be that Apple has decided to change the process to make it easier, but there has been no announcement or other communication. I will be checking into this as any of the users (helpers) here need to know how it works so they can give out the correct information.

I am discovering a similar thing. I just bought a used Mac Pro with nicely upgraded built-in hardware. The previous owner did a fresh install of Mavericks and installed some software they had purchased from the App Store. I thought of the extra software as a bonus, not much I really needed, but nice to have just in case a need arrised.

Upon recieving the Mac Pro, I proceeded to fresh install all of my software. Some from disks,.dmg, and the App Store. I also found that some updates were available for applications the previous owner installed, but they required his password to install. Also, if I go to the application page in the App Store, it is labeled "installed" with no option to purchase. Which would mean to correct this and update these apps, I would have to remove them first.

So, I am trying something different, out of curiosity, to see if it resolves the Mavericks issue particularly. I also have a MacBook Pro which I have not yet upgraded to Mavericks yet. I signed into the App Store from the MacBook Pro and downloaded Mavericks. Now the App Store on my desktop Mac Pro shows Mavericks in my Purchases. Maybe that is enough, I have to wait for an available Mavericks update to see, but maybe the App Store doesn't require a new install. Maybe it is only required to be in your Purchases.

Either way, good for Apple and the fight against Piracy.
