Q: iphoto 9 8.1.2 update to latest version

Hello support community

I do apologise if this question has been answered elsewhere . . . I haven't managed to find that thread if it has so please point me in the right direction if you can!

My problem is that I have recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to OS Mavericks and I'm finding that my iPhoto 9 (8.1.2) is slow to respond and my email is also a bit off. Can anyone suggest how I can upgrade my iPhoto and/or my Mail so that it performs as it used to. The reason I upgraded to Mavericks was so that I could use iCloud and also to sync my Macbook Pro with my iPhone (amongst other things).

When I try to find what I need (i.e upgrade iPhoto)  I am directed to the App store to buy another version of iPhoto, but as far as I am aware I should be able to upgrade for free? I will go ahead and buy new software if necessary, but I'm not sure if that is required.

Thanks for your tips!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

No, only updating from a earlier version of iPhoto 9 is free.  Moving from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9 is considered an upgrade and that requires a purchase.

A purchase is required. The update is free for folks already using iPhoto 11.

Thank you for clearing that up for me, much appreciated! So a silly question now . . .The process is that  I purchase the new iPhoto 11 software and it will guide me through the process of transferring all my photos? And if I do this all should perform as it was previously i.e fast?

1 - yes - if you backup (always backup prior to any update/upgrade) and upgrade - the application and the library will be automatically upgraded

2 - as to speed - no one can tell you - your old iPhoto should not have changed - you can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database  and repair permissions prior to upgrading iPHoto and see if that helps speed - iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 should run under Mavericks just fine - I did find that moving to iPhtoo '11 9.5.x (the 64 bit version) improved speed a lot for me though

Do you perchance have any virus detection applications installer or have used cleaning apps like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?  All of those types of apps are known to slow Macs and are not needed.  They do more harm than good.

Thanks Larry - I did backup first (before upgrading to Mavericks) - I am doing a backup again now (although I do that regularly) and will follow through with what you suggest . . .

Thanks, good advice, I do not have those applications however and I am glad to hear they are no good as I suspected!

There is no such link - as previously posted in this thread

No, only updating from a earlier version of iPhoto 9 is free. Moving from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9 is considered an upgrade and that requires a purchase.

And at this stage the only way to upgrade to iPhoto '09 is to purchase an iLife '09 DVD from Amazon, eBay or other source - only upgrades available from Apple are to iPhoto '11 version 9.5.1 which requires Mavericks - OS X version 10.9.x

I learned that just after I posted. Sorry! Does the upgrade to iPhoto 9 integrate the old version? In other words, will I have one iPhoto or two? Thank you so much.
