Q: iTunes install errors: MSVCR80.dll and Error 7 (windows error 126)

All of a sudden my iTunes stopped working, and I get the following error messages:

1. the program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem

and

2. iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).

Now I've checked the forums and followed the advice of uninstalling all Apple applications, rebooting, and reinstalling iTunes.

This is not working. I've tried installing as Administrator but doesn't make any difference at all.

There must be a way to fix this? I'm not a tech geek but I want to avoid having to take my laptop back to factory settings to sort this out.

Thanks

I tried uninstalling iTunes, Mobile Device Support, Application Support and Software update.  Mobile Device Support would not uninstall.

Then I rebooted and attempted to download a fresh version of iTunes.  No luck.  I could see that there was communication between my computer and Apple's server, but the file was not installing on my computer.

I thought it might be a compatability issue with Firefox (th browser I was using), so I dusted off an old copy of MS Internet Explorer.

The download went perfectly, the itunes program installed successfully, and iTunes is again up and running.

    Thanks for nothing, Apple.

    G'day pcbugfixer,

Yes I did read all the posts and not skip to page 5 as you alluded to.

Your point "Noteworthy also is the point that it was v11.1.4.62 that failed to update the iTunes installation and corrupted it, yet with a new clean install it performed correctly and installed with all relevant applications and parameters for iTunes v11.1.4.62"--I agree.  It is noteworthy and suggestive that the problem lies in the install script for v11.1.4.

The comments from Vaquero show the willingness of everyone to help fix the problem rapidly.  I thank them all.

From the pointer I mentioned before, it is noteworthy that the file in question has two versions with the same version number, but different hash codes (this means the files are not the same).  I queried a friend with much more experience and he said Microsoft is notorious for producing code modules that are different but with identical version numbers.  That's just sloppy and hinders fixing defects.

The real point I was making was we all have a business relationship with Apple.  We've paid our money and expect them to deliver.  Things were working before their update and now they don't.  Apple needs to get some pros on this problem and fix it.

As far as bringing in a 3rd party to fix the problem, we here in the States are getting anxious about computer security these days.  We either fix it ourselves, or get a trusted source to fix it.  IMHO, Apple owns this problem.

The frequently suggested repair steps listed in comments athttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926 did not work for me yesterday when I attempted for an entire day to fix this commonly reported problem with the newest iTunes update. I now realize that I overlooked one step listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923.

My computer has a Windows 64 bit operating system. I should have  paid attention to this instruction:

"If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you'll need to confirm that the following folders have been removed:

    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\iPod\  "

Tonight, I removed those previous version files from the Program Files (x86) directory and executed the rest of the steps listed. Success resulted. If you are struggling like I did to install the iTunes newest update on a Windows 64 bit operating system, you might benefit to recheck that you followed the instruction listed above.

Thank you Vaquero.  Worked fine.  Apple really are 'timewasters'!  (Unfortunately our time not theirs!).

Same issue here.  Apple, please fix without me having to go through some long uninstall/reinstall process.

Unfortunately at this time the long uninstall/reinstall process seems to be the only thing that works, Over the years I've been through similar problems with different suites from different publishers. Even if Apple are working on an easy repair tool for this issue there is no telling how long that might take. On the other hand they may consider that their existing removal and repaid advice is sufficient.

Yes this is the right answer, I followed your steps and reinstalled without rebooting, and it works now.  Thank you.  In summary:

    Remove

    • iTunes
    • Apple Software Update
    • Apple Mobile Device Support
    • Bonjour
    • Apple Application Support

    Install iTunes

I've got the same problem as penelope184

"Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient priveleges to start system services."

Options I have are to 'Abort', 'Retry' or 'Ignore'

But if i choose 'Abort' the installation canceles. The same to 'ignore' - installation rolls back and canceles.

If 'repeat' - the same message appears.

Previously I have uninstalled every apple program and deleted all related folders

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

Did you uninstall all five components in order?

And if the apple mobile device does not seem to uninstall or goes backwards ignore and move to the next one

after you have all five items uninstalled in order restart your computer.. then go download and install itunes

I myself have windows 7 home premium and had heard of the troubles people were having so what I did is click start button and typed in services in the search box.. waited for it to come up and clicked on services located the apple mobile device support and clicked stop service.. then went to download and install itunes and it worked like a charm for me!

Good luck! Try what I did before going thru all the uninstalling again!

IOBit Uninstaller is much better than windows uninstaller

i fully checked what files have remained from uninstallation
then deleted it and also cleaned registry by using Iobit uninstaller

    then rebooted and installed itunes
