Q: How do I find out my login keychain password?

I keep getting a notice when in Mail that reads:  MAIL WANTS TO USE THE 'LOGIN" KEYCHAIN.  And I need to type in a PASSWORD, which I don't remember.  Does anyone know a way of finding out what that password was?   Thank you.

Have you tried the password you use to log in to the computer/for your user account? If memory serves, Keychain uses that same password.

Thank you for responding, Lyssa.  Unfortunately I don't remember the password I used to log in.  Do you happen to know a way I can locate that?  Or perhaps change it?  I'm using an older Macpro with OS 10.5.8.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.  I've spent hours on this.

Hmmm, resetting the password for the user account doesn't change the one used for Keychain Access - I've tried that myself & ended up with one password to log in and another for the Keychain.

Perhaps this Apple article will be of assistance?

Thank you again.  I don't even know what the Keychain or it's password is and I'm a little afraid to change it because if I do and there are other passwords connected to it, I'll be throwing the entire system out of wack. I've tried every old password I can think of.

It shouldn't throw anything out of wack if you follow the steps - it won't change the passwords in the keychain, just the one used to access it.

Any saved passwords in it will remain unaffected.

The other option would be to create a new user account, migrate your documents & other data to the new account, and start from scratch. That can be a bit time-consuming, so try resetting the keychain first.

    Hi Lyssa,

I believe this actually did solve the issue.  Not sure yet, but it seems to be working properly.  Thanks so much.
