I have an 27" iMac from 2008. Can I use it as a secondary display on a new macbook pro?

I have an 27" iMac from 2008. Can I use it as a secondary display on a new Macbook Pro? I can see that I need an adapter to go from either the Mini Display Port or the FireWire 800 Port to work with a Thunderbolt port, but does will the 2008 model be able to function as a secondary display?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
