How do I import photos from my camera without being forced to use any silly mac software?

I haev a PC as well as a new Mac Mini.

It has always bugged me that Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera when i plug it in.

On my PC (windows 7) it simply recognizes it as a "removable storage device" and i can access the flash memory as if it was a hard drive and simply drag my photos to a folder on my computer. (this same technique works with my iphone photos)

However on my Mac it seems there is no way to open up the flash memory and just drag photos off and manually import and manage my photos. I do not like all of the complicated software to complete a simple task like this.

Am i missing something? if so please fill me in. thanks!

It does not force you to do that.

Open iPhoto, go to iPhoto / Preferences and change the setting so no application opens when the camera is connected.

User uploaded file

Whether you change the setting or not, the camera does indeed appear as a "removable storage device". At least mine does:

User uploaded file

And you can double click the camera icon and navigate the contents. The contents are shown exactly as they would be on any "storage device":

User uploaded file

Thus you have the option in iPhoto preferences to let it do it for you, or do it yourself if that is your choice.

It seems nikon cameras show up but canon's do not. I'm using a canon.

i Wonder why macs function like this. I have the same issue with my iphone. It never shows up as a hard drive on my mac but always on my PC.

i Guess image capture is the best solution. Or purchase a flash card reader.

IM doing this for my mom. She is an artist who takes photos of her work for different websites and flyers.

they request certain resolution and she has been having a horrible time using iPhoto because its sooo complex and she isn't a computer savvy. She ends up with crappy low resolution exports from iPhoto.

i Was hoping to teach her where and how her photos are being stored, but I guess apple doesn't want you to know that info :-) very hard to teach someone when you cant show them the bare bones.

(She thinks her photos are stored inside iPhoto app. I tell her they are located in a folder on her computer and iPhoto finds them and displays them. she looks at me like im chicken little -- thanks apple :-)

dont get get me wrong i love apple but i know what in doin.
