How long does it take for iMessage to deactivate?

I got a new phone (android platform) and traded in my iphone 4. As I've seen many others post about I've encountered that common problem with not receiving messages sent by my friends with iphones. (Although it seems to only be those with ios 7.) I went and unregistered my old phone as suggested in other posts. My question is this, how long will it take for it to actually deactivate after I unregister my phone? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!

Unregistering your phone number from your support profile doesn't do anything. What you need to do is follow this article: iOS: Deactivating iMessage - Support - Apple

If that doesn't work, contact Apple Support who can revoke the iMessage/Facetime certificate from association to your phone number.

Also:

1) Go to www.icloud.com and remove the device from FMiP.

2) Go to appleid.apple.com and change the primary email address of your Apple ID to something different (per HT5621).

3) Also at applied.apple.com, change the password to your Apple ID (per HT5624).

4) Have an iPhone user attempting to send you a text message do the following:

4a) Verify that in Settings > Messages that if iMessage is turned on to ensure that ‘Send as SMS’ is also turned on.

4b) Delete the existing message thread, if any.

4c) Delete the your contact and readd, using only the phone number (no email).

4d) Attempt to send a new text message to you.
