Mac HD gone?

The other day my computer froze, so I rebooted it, but then I got the flashing grey folder with a quesion mark on it. I went to OSX utilities by pressing the power button while holding ctrl, and I wanted to reinstall OSX but the Mac HD icon was gone. There's nowhere else to install it, so how do I go about fixing this? (I opened up disk utility but the only thing there was the Mac OSX base system.

Alternatively, is there a way to install OSX onto an external hard drive so I can boot it up temporarily?

1. The internal drive appears to have died. If it did, it needs to be replaed.

2. Yes. Plug the drive in and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if it's not already in that format.
