Q: I have latest version of Numbers (3.1) but when I try to open a Numbers sp. sheet it says I need a newer version.

Numbers sp sheet is shared. Both user systems on same rev of Numbers.

I have latest version of Numbers (3.1) but when I try to open a Numbers sp. sheet it says I need a newer version. There is no newer version available.

The files get info box says to open it with Numbers 3.1 (default).  Other user has no problem opening the file.

What to do next?

OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

    Hi mwalk,

Are you sure you are trying to open the document with the newest version of Numbers, located in your Applications folder, not with the old version, which is still on your Mac, in a subfolder named iWork '09?

The icons are similar, and easily confused.

I am sure of the version and I am opening it from within the app.

Another way to control which version of Numbers is used to open your document is to locate the file in Finder, Right-Click and select Open With: Numbers 3.1. If I were you, I would give that a try before giving up.

I did as you said. No difference in behavior.  The file was saved with 3.0.1.

That's odd. Most of the problems are with not being aware of which version of Numbers is being used to open the document. If you want to email me the file, I'll see if it will open here. I don't know what else to advise you except to go back to an earlier version of the document, either with Browse Versions or with Time Machine.

I was having the same problem with mine, but this worked for me.

I right clicked on the Numbers icon in my dock and choose remove from dock.

The opened my App folder and found the new version of Numbers and dragged it to my dock.

Now it works great. I also did this for the newer versions of Keynote and Pages.

The file is shared. Other user does not have a problem opening file, changing file and saving file. Both users are using Numbers 3.1. I have replaced Numbers 3.1 with another download. I still get same message of needing new version when opening from within the Numbers 3.1 File Open command.

The "get info" (for the sp.sheet) window shows Open with: Numbers 3.1.app.    I renamed the app to have 3.1 on it, to keep it obvious.

Where does the decision get made and based on what tag?

    Hi mwalk,

    Try this.

    Launchpad (second page) Disk Utility

    Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 9.20.53 pm.png

Or if you can't find it there,

Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Storage > Disc Utility

Select Macintosh HD and Repair Permissions.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    Another thought,

Get Info then Scroll the Info window to see the very bottom. Do you have Read and Write privilege?

    Regards,

    Ian.

Thank you! I've been pulling my hair out trying to get to a tax doc. I would not have considered the possibility of the wrong version being on my dock.

I am not experiencing this problem, but I was having some other issues and a techie friend suggested, as a last resort, try deleting the Numbers folder in a directory called Containers. It worked for me.

    Close Numbers

Finder, in the Go menu bar item, click Go to Folder

In the Go to Folder window, paste: ~/Library/Containers/

    Click Go

    In that folder, delete com.apple.iWork.Numbers

    Restart the computer

    Launch Numbers

My friend said that if I had any Numbers preferences, custom templates, etc... they'd be gone. That wasn't an issue for me, so I didn't really ask how to do this and not lose those things. Maybe you can save that folder off instead of deleting or something, but I don't really know.

I had the same problem. The Numbers document was saved out by a third party cloud service, and on the "remote" machine I could not get it to open.

I got a good close look at the file size: 0 bytes. Somehow, the remote copy contained no data.

I went back to the original machine and duplicated the Numbers file. That file's duplicate then opened correctly on the remote system.
