When I try to move files from my imac (v10.8.5) to my external harddrive I get the error message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." How can I resolve this? Thank you.

How is your external drive formatted? Typically, manufacturers format their drives for PC's and use NTFS, which the Mac cannot write to. If that's the case with you, format the drive with a GUID partition scheme and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Sometimes that generic error code occurs if you are trying to copy files with file names that contain special characters or if you are trying to copy a lot of data at once.
Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure how the external hard drive is formatted but I have had it a couple of years and never had a problem with it before. As for the files, the message appears even if I try to move a file within the hard drive, and they are only files I have moved back and forth before.
