Q: upgrading iOS on locked iPhone 4

Hi,  I bought a locked iPhone 4 on ebay this summer.  It was used on ATT, and I use it on Consumer Cellular.  I want to upgrade to iOS 7.0.4, but I wanted to see if I might run into password problems or something if I do that.  I am trying to have the original owner unlock it for me if he can, but if he can't, should I go ahead with the upgrade?

The reason I want the upgrade is that I believe I can get MMS to work if I get the iOS upgrade and then the carrier update.

iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.3

I see there are some apps that you can buy to track data usage and set limits so that it gives alerts.  This sounds like a great option to prevent huge data usage while being able to keep data on all of the time.  Thanks!

I don't know how low your data cap is, but if you have WiFi at home and at work, you're not likely to have much of a problem unless someone has a habit of streaming audio and video while away from WiFi...

She only has a 50 MB cap.  She can't seem to see that she has MMS unless she puts the phone on cellular data.  That is, if it is on wifi, she has no idea that she got an MMS.  So, she has to leave the cellular data on  all of the time to see if she got MMS.  If she wants to do some surfing or streaming, it would be ideal of she could use wifi but still have cellular data on for getting the MMS messages.

50MB? Seriously? they sell them that low? That's not even remotely adequate for any Smartphone. Get more or re-consider the whole smartphone thing.

It's enough for her to do emails on data, which is all she needs, really.  even if we bump her up to a higher level, we will need to know how to keep hogging, unnecessary data usage from becoming an issue.

You can disable specific apps from using cellular data in Settings>Cellular.
